WELCOME TO TROUT TOWN, USA
About Roscoe, New York
Nestled where the Beaverkill and Willowemoc meet, this legendary fishing hamlet is a haven for anglers, adventurers, and anyone seeking the authentic Catskills experience.
The Heart of Trout Town
Roscoe calls itself “Trout Town, USA” for good reason. Perched at the confluence of two legendary trout streams—the Beaverkill River and Willowemoc Creek—this tiny hamlet has been a mecca for fly fishing enthusiasts for over a century.
With a population of just under 500, Roscoe packs an outsized reputation. Anglers from around the world come to cast a line in waters that helped shape American dry fly fishing. The legendary Junction Pool, where the two rivers meet, is considered one of the most written-about fishing spots in North America.
Just two hours from New York City, Roscoe serves as the perfect gateway to the Catskills—whether you’re here for the fishing, the hiking, or simply to soak up the small-town charm.

A Town Built on Tradition
From Westfield Flats to Roscoe
Originally called Westfield Flats in 1789, the area was home to the Delaware Indians before European settlers arrived. The land was part of the Hardenbergh Patent and later purchased by Robert Livingston, the last Lord of Livingston Manor. The hamlet was eventually named for New York Senator Roscoe Conkling, a powerful political figure of the Gilded Age.
The Great Fire of 1916
On November 19, 1916, a devastating fire destroyed 23 buildings in Roscoe, mostly along Stewart Avenue. Firefighters from Livingston Manor and Liberty rushed to help, but after losing water pressure, they could only watch. The Presbyterian Church was miraculously spared, and today a marker commemorates the town’s resilience.
The Birthplace of American Fly Fishing
The first recorded fly fishing match in the United States took place on the Beaverkill River in 1864. Since then, Roscoe has become hallowed ground for anglers. The Catskill Fly Fishing Center & Museum preserves this rich heritage, ensuring future generations understand why these waters are so special.
